Short-term Care Quality
To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home an elite grade of A+ for its short-term care rating. Short-term care grades are based on a facility's quantity of skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This includes a wide range of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, not to mention other forms of therapy. This facility excelled at the highest level in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered about 50% more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is an excellent sign. The final measure we assessed in this area is the number of residents who eventually returned home from the nursing home. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in Illinois in this area with 64.1 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, at most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
Adding to an already impressive profile, this facility also received virtually flawless health inspections in recent years. As a result, we awarded it an A+ inspection grade. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating our inspection scores. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are relatively minor. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Nurse Quality
Among its many impressive grades, this facility received an excellent nursing grade. In fact, we gave it a grade of A in that category. Our nursing grade focuses on the facility's level of nurse staffing. We look at both the levels of skill of those nurses as well as the quantity of hours spent with patients. This facility provides an impressive 3.9 hours of nursing care per resident daily. Of this total, nearly one quarter of the hours were provided by registered nurses, which is among the most highly skilled levels of nurses. Finally, this facility was also above average in each of the major quality measures we looked at in this category. It performed well in the area of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we looked at was long-term care. We gave this facility an acceptable grade in this category, with a grade of C. While this isn't as favorable as some of this nursing home's other grades, it is nevertheless a middle of the pack score. For residents looking for a permanent residence as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care grades are a key measure. On top of providing solid levels of nursing care, this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 99.15967 percent of its residents. This figure is higher than the majority of nursing homes. This combination proved to be effective as this nursing home also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 1.09 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a substantially better hospitalization rate than the average nursing home.
