We want to draw your attention to the fact that this nursing home outperformed its overall score in the category of inspections. In fact, it received an excellent government inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest scores in that category with an A. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining our inspection ratings. One key factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are relatively insignificant. While this place had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in the industry.

We also want to draw your attention to the fact that this nursing home received a great short-term care score. Indeed, we awarded it one of our best scores in that category with a score of A. Short-term care grades are vital for prospective residents in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally mandates additional skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means a broad scope of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides more care with registered nurses to its residents than the average nursing home. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients that eventually returned home from this facility. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in the country in this area with 64.8 percent of its residents returning home.

One of this facility's better category grades was in the area of nursing care. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of C. Our nursing score looks at the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We look at both the levels of training of those nurses as well as the quantity of hours spent with residents. This nursing home provided just 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is well below average. However, more than one quarter of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly trained nurses. This is a high ratio of skilled nursing care. We weight these hours heavily in calculating our ratings. Finally, our nursing scores also consider some quality-focused metrics. We look at the percentage of patients who suffered pressure ulcers and major falls. Sometimes these statistics are indicators of the quality of nursing care, since better care can reduce these issues.

Historical

The final category we assessed was long-term care. It received a lowly F for this category, which is a very poor score. This is certainly a major disappointment. When facilities receive a score in this range in this category it generally means the nursing home didn't perform well in our quality measures relating to resident care. After assessing the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 93.71728 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is a bit less than we were hoping for but still a respectable figure. To our surprise, this facility wasn't as bad as we expected at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Although it had 2.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was not bad since it had more complicated patients.
