Facility Inspections
On top of receiving a great overall score, this nursing home also excelled in our inspections category, which is based on the facility's recent inspection reports. In fact, we gave it an A in that category. Arguably the most significant factor we consider in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better scores in this area most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This place was assessed 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This indicates that the government inspectors did not consider any of these deficiencies to pose an imminent risk to patient health or safety. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also was dominant in the category of short-term care, where it received a score of A. Very few facilities performed better in this area. Our short-term care grade is typically used to judge a facility's rehabilitation services. To offer highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to feature better levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other types of therapists. Remarkably, this nursing home provides about 50% more services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is a very favorable sign. The last metric we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents that returned home from the facility. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Iowa in this area with 63.4 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
Another one of this facility's impressive category grades came in the area of nursing care. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B+. Our nursing rating consists of many datapoints, however, the paramount one is the number of nurse hours spent with patients. This nursing home provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per resident daily. About one-fourth of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most skilled levels of nurses. This is a high ratio of skilled nursing care. We weight these hours performed by these types of nurses more in calculating our nursing scores. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can often be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Long-term Care Quality
Moving on to the fourth category, this facility was given a decent long-term care grade. Although this was not as elite as many of its other scores, this is truly not a major area of concern. For residents looking for a permanent residence rather than rehabilitation, long-term care is a very important category. After we finished looking at the amount of care provided by nurses, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 93.24324 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Nevertheless, this facility was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 1.68 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
