Short-term Care Quality
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ short-term care grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. In calculating our short-term care scores, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our goal is to formulate a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not every facility employs these types of nurses. However, according to the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last metric we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that 6.6 percent of this facility's residents returned home.
Nurse Quality
We also awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our nursing grade. Nursing scores are largely tied to the facility's nurse staffing. This facility provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality measures in determining our nursing grades. This facility performed very well in the area of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.

Facility Inspections
We also wanted to point out this nursing home's nearly flawless inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A- in this category. Arguably the most important factor we look at in determining our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this category typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G through L. This tells you CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in this industry.
Long-term Care Quality
Switching gears to the fourth area, we gave this nursing home a D for long-term care. This is the facility's least impressive category score. However, you shouldn't focus exclusively one weak category. In a long-term care environment, the facility's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. After considering the quantity of care provided by nurses, we turned to the facility's vaccination statistics. We were optimistic to discover that this facility vaccinates 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia. Surprisingly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility had less hospitalizations than most nursing homes. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
