Facility Inspections
In addition to being a great overall grade, this facility also received A+ health inspections in recent years. Its inspections were virtually flawless. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing these inspection scores. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies are relatively minor. This facility was hit with 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered severe. This indicates that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies to create an immediate threat to patient health or safety. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in this industry.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home fared well in the category of short-term care. Indeed, we awarded it a grade of A for that category, which is one of our most favorable grades. In our short-term care rating, we strive to forge a sound gauge for rehabilitation services. In this process, we look at a facility's scope of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. Remarkably, this nursing home provides about 50% more services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is a very favorable sign. The final datapoint we looked at in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Pennsylvania in this area with 60.7 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home also received a strong nursing score. In fact, we awarded it an above average grade of B+ in this area. The nursing score analyzes a handful of subcategories, however, the most important consideration is the number of nurse hours spent with patients. This nursing home provides an impressive 3.6 hours of nursing care per patient daily. Out of this total, more than one quarter of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which is among the most highly trained levels of nurses. We apply more weight to hours provided by skilled nurses in computing our nursing ratings. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This nursing home performed better than average in this area. This is often a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can typically be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Long-term Care Quality
Switching gears to the final area, this facility really did not perform very well. With a very poor grade of F in that area, this is clearly this nursing home's weakest category. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it typically means the facility did not perform well in our quality measures relating to resident care. After looking at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination record. We were concerned by the fact that this nursing home vaccinated only 81.73302 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Surprisingly, this place was actually decent at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 0.65 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. This is its best feature in this category.
