Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home really excelled in the category of short-term care. In fact, we awarded it an A- for that category, which is one of our highest scores. This really salvaged its profile. In the category of short-term care, we seek to qualify measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We look at a facility's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. This nursing home elevated its grade in this category by offering more care from registered nurses to its residents than the average facility. The final datapoint we looked at in this area is the number of patients that were able to return home from the nursing home. It fared as well as just about any nursing home in Wisconsin with 60.9 percent of its residents returning home.
Facility Inspections
Inspections is another area where this nursing home excelled. In fact, we awarded this facility an A- for our inspections category. Perhaps the most significant factor we consider in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Places with better scores in this category most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. While this place had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies shouldn't stop you from considering a nursing home.
Nurse Quality
Moving on to another strength for this facility, it also received an elite nursing grade. In fact, we gave this nursing home a grade of D. Our nursing score is largely tied to a nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This facility provided 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is below the national average. In addition to being below average in nursing hours per resident, this facility also had poor scores in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This nursing home was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in both of these metrics. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These statistics helped pull down this nursing home's nursing rating quite a bit.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's least impressive area was long-term care, which is the last category we looked at. For this category, we gave this facility a grade of just D. In a long-term care environment, the facility's primary objective is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. After considering the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination data. We were optimistic to find that this nursing home vaccinated 97.05882 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Unfortunately, this nursing home's hospitalization rate was far less favorable. Here we found that this nursing home had 2.74 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a concerning rate.
