Short-term Care Quality
Although we gave this facility a terrible overall grade, we awarded it a grade of B for our short-term care rating. In determining our short-term care grades, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our objective is to devise a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various facilities. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Finally, we assessed the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This proved to be a real strength for this facility. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the country in this area with 65.2 percent of its residents returning home. This is a substantially higher rate than most facilities.
Facility Inspections
This nursing home didn't receive favorable government inspection reports in recent years. In fact, it received just a D for its inspection rating, which was unfortunately its second best category. Our inspection ratings weigh many items found on the nursing home's inspection reports. When you find severe deficiencies on the reports, this is generally the worst sign. Severe deficiencies indicate a threat to resident safety. This particular nursing home was assessed 4 deficiencies by CMS. The only positive thing we found is that none of the deficiencies were in the categories that suggest they posed a risk to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility also received 10 substantiated complaints in recent years. This is yet another bad sign.
Nurse Quality
Turning to the area of nursing care, this facility received a grade of just D in this category. We assessed the qualifications of nurses employed by the nursing home, as well as the number of hours those nurses were with patients, in computing our grade in this area. This nursing home averages 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below the national average. In addition to receiving below average marks for total nursing hours, this place was less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and found this facility was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in this metric.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to our fourth category, this facility didn't fare well in this category either. Due to a very poor grade of F in long-term care, this is about as terrible as it gets. For residents in need of a permanent place to live as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care grades are an important measure. In addition to assessing the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. Thankfully, this facility provided the vaccine to 95.3125 percent of its residents, which is a very respectable total. To our surprise, this place also keeps its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Sadly, a few of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
