One of the reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ in short-term care. This is simply as good as it gets in this area. Short-term care grades are commonly used to grade a nursing home's rehabilitation services. To provide high-end rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to feature higher levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This nursing home excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. In fact, it provided about 50% more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than a typical facility. This is an excellent sign. The final statistic we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients who eventually returned home from the facility. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in California in this area with 57.9 percent of its patients returning home. With most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.

This facility really excelled in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Nursing ratings are primarily based on a nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This facility boasts a really impressive 4.3 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, of which a significant percentage was provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly highly trained levels of nurses. On top of offering impressive levels of nursing care, this place also performed well in several of the quality measures we assessed. In terms of the number of its patients suffering falls leading to major injury, this facility performed as well as any nursing home the country.

We also wanted to emphasize this nursing home's nearly flawless government inspections in recent years. We gave them a grade of A- in this category. Inspection scores account for a host of factors found on a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area generally have few severe deficiencies. This nursing home was hit with 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe deficiencies. This tells you that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies to be an immediate risk to patient safety or health. A few relatively minor deficiencies aren't something to panic about.

The final area we graded was long-term care, which is a low point for this facility. We awarded this facility a grade of D for long-term care, rendering this the facility's worst category grade. We'd nevertheless recommend that you look at the bigger picture. For patients looking for a permanent place to live as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care grades are a key measure. Due to its grade in this category, we were surprised to learn that this facility had favorable subcategory scores in both nursing hours and its vaccination records. In fact, this nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. This figure is actually higher than the majority of nursing homes. To our surprise, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.52 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility has fewer hospitalizations than most nursing homes. Sadly, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
