Facility Inspections

Grade: A

On top of receiving a great overall grade, this facility also received top notch inspections in recent years. We awarded it one of our better grades in this category, with an A. Arguably the most significant factor we consider in determining our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher grades in this category typically avoided the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

This facility was given strong marks in the area of short-term care as well. Consequently, we gave it one of our strongest grades in that area with a score of A-. In crafting these short-term care ratings, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to devise a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Fortunately, it appear that this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final item we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that 5.9 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

This nursing home's next best category was nursing. We awarded it a grade of B- in this category. While this wasn't quite as good as some of its other category grades, this isn't a bad score either. Nursing ratings are based largely on nurse staffing levels. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures. While this nursing home got docked a bit for nursing hours per resident, it excelled in some of these quality-based measures. With fewer than five percent of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed remarkably well in this metric. This can be an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as having a system of moving residents at least once a day.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: C

Moving on to the last area, this facility was awarded a C for long-term care, which is generally an acceptable score. Our long-term care grade focuses on a facility's assistance with daily living instead of the highly skilled nursing or medical services that are critical to a rehabilitation facility. Once we assessed the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. Finally, this facility was also able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
