Nurse Quality

Grade: B

While we were not high on this nursing home overall, we gave it a grade of B for our nursing rating. When calculating a nursing home's nursing score, we consider the number of hours nurses spend with residents as well as the skill levels of those nurses. This particular nursing home provided 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality measures in determining our nursing grades. This facility performed very well when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.

Facility Inspections

Grade: B-minus

We actually gave this nursing home a very solid grade in the area of inspections as well. In fact, we gave it a B- in this category. Inspection ratings account for several factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One key criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

Short-term Care Quality

The next area we analyzed is short-term care. In that category, we gave this facility a C. Our short-term care scores are based in part on a nursing home's quantity of skilled nursing services. This means a broad scope of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, not to mention other types of therapy. We found that this nursing home was below average in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other nursing homes. The final datapoint we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return home. We discovered that just 0 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is below average.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: F

Switching gears to the next category, this facility didn't perform well in this area either. Due to a rock bottom grade of F in long-term care, this is just about as as uninspiring as it gets. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means the facility did not perform well in our quality measures relating to patient care. On top of considering the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. Candidly, we were a bit worried that this nursing home vaccinated just 56 percent of its patients. Surprisingly, this facility was actually able to limit hospitalizations.
