Facility Inspections

Grade: A

On top of receiving a great overall score, this nursing home also earned first-rate inspections in recent years. We awarded it one of our higher scores in that area, with a grade of A. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining our inspection ratings. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these can be quite insignificant. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This means that CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Remember that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in this industry.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

This nursing home performed well in the area of short-term care. Indeed, we gave it a score of A for that category, which turns out to be one of our best grades. Our short-term care grade is generally employed to gauge a facility's rehabilitation services. In order to provide highly scored rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must provide better levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every facility employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final measure we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We found that 5.8 percent of this facility's patients returned home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-plus

Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. The nursing rating is based on many components, most of which are tied to nursing hours. This facility provided 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Maryland in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as having a system of moving patients at least once a day.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: C

Moving on to the fourth category, this facility was given a respectable long-term care score. Even though this was not nearly as strong as a few of its other scores, this is still not the end of the world. If you are seeking services other than short-term rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each facility's long-term care ratings. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 89.68825 percent of its residents. This is several points less than what we expected. Nevertheless, this facility keeps its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
