Facility Inspections
In addition to earning a great overall score, this nursing home excelled in inspections, which is based on its recent inspection reports. In fact, we gave it an A in this category. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining these inspection grades. One of those factors is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies are relatively insignificant. While this place had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This means that the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Nurse Quality
Among its many impressive grades, this facility received an excellent nursing grade. In fact, we gave it a grade of A- in that category. Our nursing score is primarily associated with a nursing home's nurse staffing. This nursing home provides a very impressive 4.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is among the higher totals in Indiana. Lastly, this facility also excelled in several quality-based metrics we looked at. With fewer than five percent of its residents experiencing pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home Indiana in this category. This is often a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Many pressure ulcers can be avoided by offering better nursing care and having a policy of turning residents more frequently.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to another strength for this facility, we awarded them one of our stronger scores in our long-term care category as well, with a grade of B+. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in this category it generally means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. In addition to assessing the elite level of care provided by aids and other staff at this nursing home, we also were pleased by the facility's record for vaccinations. For example, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 98.83721 percent of its residents, which is very impressive. The last statistic we assessed is the facility's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this place had 2.04 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
The last category we looked at was short-term care, in which this facility was awarded a B. Believe it or not, this proved to be this nursing home's weakest area. A nursing home is doing something right when their weakest score still beats out most facilities. In the category of short-term care, we endeavor to qualify indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We assess a nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. One of this nursing home's strengths is registered nurse hours. We found that it offers more care from registered nurses to its residents than most facilities. The final item we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We found that 43.2 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
