Facility Inspections
While this facility's overall grade was not bad, it really fared well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A+ for that category, which is one of our highest scores. These inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these issues by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Unfortunately, we were not able to find deficiency data for this facility. We wish we had more data for this nursing home. Without having access to all of the deficiency related data, it ended up being a challenge to assess it in this area.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to an additional strength for this facility, we awarded it a strong long-term care grade. Indeed, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A-. Facilities that do well in this category tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 99.07834 percent of its patients. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients healthy. The last datapoint we looked at was its hospitalization rate. We found that this facility had 2.93 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this wasn't as favorable as most of its other scores in this category, this figure may be skewed for some nursing homes based on some of the preexisting medical conditions of patients.
Nurse Quality
Next, we looked at the nursing category where we gave this nursing home an F. This is certainly not one of this facility's better areas. We weighed the licensure of nurses at the facility, in addition to the number of hours those nurses were with patients, in computing our rating in this area. Quantity of nursing care does not appear to be the source of this facility's poor nursing grade. This nursing home provides 4.5 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This is above average. In determining our grades, we apply additional weight to hours performed by highly skilled nurses such as registered nurses. Despite performing well in terms of nursing hours, this place didn't fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This nursing home was above the national average in both of these metrics. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these datapoints dragged down this facility's nursing rating quite a bit.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we scored is short-term care. Sadly, it received an abysmal F for this category, which is a rock bottom grade. This is certainly a significant concern. Short-term care grades are crucial for residents requiring rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires more highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means a broad range of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. As you might expect, we found that this facility offers significantly less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than the typical facility. The final metric we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients that were able to return home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 22.2 percent of its patients returning home. This was well below the national average.
