Facility Inspections
The main reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it received an elite inspection score. In fact, its inspection grade was far superior to its overall score. In the inspections category, we gave this facility an A. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in computing our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this category typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. While this place had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G through L. This tells you the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Additionally, we awarded this nursing home a B in our long-term care category. This happens to be one of our more favorable grades. For residents in need of a permanent residence rather than skilled nursing, long-term care is an important category. Once we finished looking at the volume of care provided by nurses, we then looked at the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 75.44304 percent of its residents for pneumonia. Although its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we like to see, we were pleased to find facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.19 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home has less hospitalizations than many nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
Next, we looked at the nursing category where we gave this nursing home an F. This is certainly not one of this facility's better areas. The nursing score consists of quite a few factors, many of which are tied to nursing hours. This place averaged a meager 3.2 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. Unfortunately, this facility also had abysmal scores in some of the quality-based metrics to pair with its low nursing hour totals. We looked at the percent of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and we were quite disappointed. This place was at approximately 150 percent of the national average in this metric. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. This metric helped pull down this nursing home's nursing score quite a bit.
Short-term Care Quality
The last category we scored is short-term care. Sadly, it received an F in this area, which is a rock bottom score. This is clearly a significant concern. Short-term care grades are typically used to measure a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. In order to offer highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to feature higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other types of therapists. Based on its grade in this area, we weren't surprised to learn that this facility is well below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours offered to its residents based on the metrics we looked at. Finally, we assessed the percentage of patients that ultimately were able to return home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 37.1 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
