While we were not high on this nursing home's overall grade, it actually received a very impressive inspection report this year. In fact, it received an excellent inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest scores in that category with an A-. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection scores. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being relatively minor. This particular nursing home received 7 deficiencies on its inspection report. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.

This nursing home also was given a favorable grade in our long-term care category. We gave this facility a better than average grade of B in that category. For prospective residents seeking a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care is an important category. Once we assessed the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 89.21162 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is slightly lower than we were hoping for but still a respectable figure. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.86 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Among this nursing home's several poor grades was its F in the area of nursing care. We analyzed the qualifications of nurses employed by the nursing home, in addition to the number of hours the nurses worked with patients, in calculating our rating in this category. With a meager 2.7 hours of nursing care per patient each day, this place's nurse staffing levels were far below average. Finally, we also looked at some quality measures in computing our nursing scores. This place was above average in two of the major statistics we considered, with good scores for avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers.

Short-term Care Quality

The last area we looked at is short-term care, where this nursing home received a bottom of the barrel score in this category as well. Unfortunately, we gave it an abysmal F in this area, which is obviously very concerning. In computing our short-term care ratings, we size up the facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. This area is often a reliable measure of the nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Finally, we considered the percentage of residents who ultimately returned home from this facility. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 43.2 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was well off the national average.
