The main reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it received an elite inspection grade. In fact, its inspection score was far superior to its overall grade. In the inspections category, we gave this facility a grade of A+. Inspection scores are based on several items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that receive favorable grades in this category typically have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This place received 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered severe. This tells you that CMS did not deem any of these deficiencies an imminent risk to resident safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.

This facility also was given a strong grade in our long-term care category. We awarded this nursing home a better than average grade of B in this category. Facilities that receive this type of score in this category tend to provide consistent around the clock care to make sure patients are well cared for. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 72.98578 percent of its residents. This is slightly lower than we expected but still a decent percentage. This facility was also able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had only 1.63 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.

Sadly, this nursing home's next best score was short-term care. Nevertheless, with a D in this area, it still fared relatively poorly. Short-term care ratings are meaningful for individuals in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally utilizes higher levels of skilled nursing services. This means a wide range of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Unfortunately, we learned that this facility offers fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This definitely was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 43.7 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most nursing homes, about half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.

The final category we graded was nursing. We gave it a lowly F for this category, which is a very poor score. This is obviously a significant concern. We weighed the licensure of nurses at the facility, as well as the quantity of time the nurses spent with residents, in determining our rating in this area. This facility provided just 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. On top of receiving below average scores for total nursing hours, this place was less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and found this place was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in this statistic.
