Facility Inspections
The primary reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it earned an excellent inspection grade. Its inspection score was far superior to its overall score. In our inspections category, we gave this facility an A. Inspection scores account for a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher grades in this area typically have few severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was awarded a positive long-term care score. As a matter of fact, we gave them a B+ in that category, which is one of our better. Nursing homes that do well in this category tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to patients. In addition to looking at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 97.2477 percent of its patients, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia is often a dangerous health condition for nursing home patients so we prefer when a facility doesn't leave its residents vulnerable. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home's second least favorable score was short-term care, where it earned a grade of just D in that category. This is a well below average score. Our short-term care ratings are presumably most critical for patients in need of rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation usually mandates more skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes not just nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other types of therapy. In this facility's case, we found that it provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than a typical facility. The last measure we looked at in this area is the percentage of residents that eventually returned home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 5.4 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
Moving on to the fourth category, this nursing home really did not perform well. With a poor grade of F in nursing, this is its poorest category grade. The nursing grade is based on many data points. The most important one is the quantity of hours nurses spent with residents. This facility provided only 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Lastly, we also looked at a few quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing scores. This facility was above average in two of the areas we focus on, with solid scores for avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers.
