Registered Staff Hours
Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall score was not a highlight, it actually excelled in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A- for that category, which is one of our highest scores. Inspection scores account for several factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid places with too many severe deficiencies flagged. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
The next best category we gave this nursing home in any area came in the area of short-term care, where we awarded it a C. In calculating our short-term care grades, we analyze a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other types of therapists. This category is typically a meaningful measure of the nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. Unfortunately, this facility was below average in terms of its number of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its residents based on the metrics we assessed. The question is whether this adversely impacted quality of care. The final measure we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients that who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. We found that just 5.4 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.

Long-term Care Quality
Unfortunately, this facility's third highest category is long-term care. Nevertheless, with a grade of D in this area, it still performed somewhat badly. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in long-term care it typically means the facility did not perform well in our quality measures relating to patient care. One of the criteria we considered after nursing hours was vaccinations. We were a bit concerned this facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to only 57.53968 percent of its residents. To our surprise, this place was actually able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home had less hospitalizations than most nursing homes. This was its best score in this category.
Nurse Quality
The final area we analyzed was nursing. Sadly, it received an abysmal F in this category, which is a bottom of the barrel grade. When calculating a nursing home's nursing rating, we weigh the number of hours nurses are caring for residents as well as the skill levels of those nurses. This nursing home averaged a meager 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is an alarmingly low total. In addition to receiving below average scores for nursing hours, this nursing home was less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and found that this facility was at approximately 150 percent of the national average in this metric.
