One of the reasons this ended up being a great nursing home is it received an A+ in our inspections category. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical area. Our inspection scores account for a host of factors included in a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better scores in this area usually have few of these severe deficiencies. This facility received 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This tells you that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies to be an imminent risk to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

An additional reason we assessed this facility so favorably is that it was given an A+ short-term care score. This is just about as strong as it gets in this category. Our short-term care scores are likely most important for folks in need of rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation generally mandates additional skilled nursing. This includes not only nursing services, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other types of therapy. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more hours of care from registered nurses to its residents. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who who were able to eventually return home from this facility. It fared as well as just about any nursing home in the country with 72.3 percent of its residents returning home.

Adding to its strong resume, this facility also received an excellent nursing score, with a grade of A. In computing a facility's nursing score, we weigh the quantity of hours nurses spend with residents and the level of licensure of those nurses. This nursing home provided 4.5 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, which is among the better figures in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the more skilled levels of nurses. We were very impressed by both of these statistics. On top of offering high levels of nursing care, this nursing home was also above average in each of the major quality-based metrics we looked at in this category. By way of illustration, it performed well in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. These areas are generally good measures of the quality of nursing care a facility provides.

Switching gears to our final area, this nursing home was awarded a very strong long-term care score. We awarded it an A- in this category, resulting in this facility receiving straight A's. Long-term care ratings in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. On top of providing very favorable levels of nurse staffing, this facility gave the pneumonia vaccine to 98.79518 percent of its patients. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents out of the hospital. This combination proved to be effective as this nursing home was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.21 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
