Facility Inspections
Although we gave this nursing home a poor overall score, we gave it a B for our inspections category. This is due to the nursing home receiving a quality government inspection report this year. Our inspection scores weigh several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. You should avoid facilities with a bunch of severe deficiencies flagged. This nursing home received 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This indicates that the government inspectors didn't consider any of these deficiencies to cause an immediate threat to resident safety or health. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also didn't perform too badly in the area of long-term care. In fact, we gave it a B- for that category, which ended up being another one of its more respectable grades. In a long-term care setting, the facility's primary goal is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents. The last statistic we looked at is the facility's hospitalization rate. We found that this facility had 3.03 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this figure is somewhat concerning, this number can be skewed for some nursing homes due to the medical complexity of residents.
Nurse Quality
We were surprised to find that this nursing home also excelled in nursing. In fact, we awarded it an D for that category, which is one of our best grades. Nursing grades are based largely on quality and quantity of nursing care. This nursing home averaged a meager 2.9 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This is not a very impressive figure. Lastly, we also looked at some quality measures in calculating our nursing grades. This facility was above average in two of the major datapoints we considered, with good marks for avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. These datapoints are often reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care offered.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home's weakest category is short-term care, which is the final category we scored. In this area, we gave this facility a D. Our short-term care grades are presumably most meaningful for those needing a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally utilizes higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means not only nursing, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. Given its poor score in this category, we weren't stunned to find that this place provides far fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most nursing homes. The last item we considered in this area is the percentage of patients that ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 0 percent of its residents returning home.
