Facility Inspections
While we were not very complementary of this nursing home's overall grade, it actually received a very impressive inspection report this year. In fact, it received an excellent inspection report this year. As a result, it earned one of our best grades in that category with an A. Inspection ratings account for several factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid facilities with a bunch of deficiencies flagged. Fortunately, although this place had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G through L. This tells you the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home's second best area was short-term care. We gave it a grade of C in this area. This is essentially a middle of the pack score in this area. In calculating our short-term care grades, we look at the facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other types of therapists. This score is considered to be a useful measure of a facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. In this facility's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than a typical facility. The hope is always that this does not adversely impact the quality of care. Finally, we assessed the percentage of patients who ultimately returned home from this facility. We found that 4.9 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was well below average.

Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's second worse score is long-term care, where it earned a grade of just D in that category. This is a relatively poor score. If you are looking for services other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each nursing home's long-term care ratings. After looking at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 96.72897 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. Surprisingly, this place also fared well at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Sadly, a few of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
Nurse Quality
The last area we graded was nursing. Sadly, it received a lowly F for this category, which is a rock bottom score. The nursing grade considers several subcategories. The most heavily weighted variable is the quantity of hours nurses spent with residents. This facility provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. In addition to ranking below average in nursing hours per resident, this place also had poor marks in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing major falls and pressure ulcers. This nursing home was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in both of these data points. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. These statistics helped pull down this facility's nursing rating significantly.
