In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this nursing home received an A+ in the area of short-term care. In determining our short-term care scores, we scrutinize the facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other types of therapists. This grade is more often than not a fair measure of the facility's rehabilitation services. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not all nursing homes employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, according to the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last item we assessed in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that 6.1 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home as opposed to remaining at the facility on a permanent basis.

One of the other reasons we rated this facility so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing score. In that category, we awarded this nursing home an A-. There are a variety of subcategories included in this area. Most of these subcategories reflect staffing levels. This nursing home averages 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Illinois in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as by having a system of moving a patient even once per day.

This facility also performed well in the area of inspections. It earned a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. It earned one of our best grades in that category with a grade of A-. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining our inspection ratings. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some are relatively insignificant. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A few minor dings aren't the end of the world.

Turning to our last category, this nursing home didn't fare well. Due to a poor grade of F in this area, this is clearly this nursing home's weakest category. In a long-term care environment, the primary objective is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. After we finished looking at the volume of care provided by nurses, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination data. We were optimistic to discover that this facility vaccinates 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Surprisingly, this facility was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Sadly, some of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
