Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

In addition to being a respectable facility overall, this place also excelled in the area of inspections, where it received an A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this category typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This particular nursing home received 3 deficiencies on its inspection report. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This facility also was given a positive score in our long-term care category. We gave this nursing home a better than average grade of B+ in that category. Nursing homes that do well in this category typically are well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to patients. On top of assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 99 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is often a life threatening condition for nursing home residents so we prefer when a facility does not roll the dice on this issue. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The third area we looked at was short-term care, where this nursing home received a B- in this area. In computing our short-term care grades, we analyze the nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This category is generally a reliable measure of the nursing home's rehabilitation. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every facility employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, based on the information they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The final statistic we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients that were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that just 0 percent of this facility's patients returned home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

The last area we assessed is nursing. Unfortunately, we gave it a lowly F for this area, which is a bottom of the barrel score. This is obviously a significant disappointment. Nursing ratings are based in large part on levels of nurse staffing. This particular facility averaged just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This number is quite a bit below the national average. To pair with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this facility also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This place had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average facility.
