Short-term Care Quality
In addition to being a quality facility overall, this facility excelled in the category of short-term care, where it earned an A. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to judge a facility's rehabilitation services. To provide highly scored rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to feature higher levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other types of therapists. This facility excelled at the highest level in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered about 50% more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is an excellent sign. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients that who were able to eventually return home from this facility. On top of excelling in the area of physical therapy staffing, we found that it fared as well as just about any facility in the country with 58 percent of its residents returning home. Most nursing homes are below 50 percent in this metric.
Facility Inspections
This facility also excelled in inspections. In fact, we gave it an A for that category, which is one of our best scores. This is one of the few nursing homes with an overall grade in this range which received multiple category grades this high. Inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Fortunately, although this nursing home had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. We should point out that deficiency-free inspections are rare in this industry.
Nurse Quality
Another one of this facility's impressive category grades came in the area of nursing care. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B+. When calculating our nursing grades, we factor in both staffing levels and the training levels of the nurses. This place provided 4.3 hours of nursing care per patient daily, which is among the higher figures in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most skilled levels of nurses. We were very impressed by these figures. On top of providing high levels of nursing care, this nursing home also fared well in several of the quality measures we looked at. In terms of the number of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed better than the national average.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we analyzed was nursing, was this facility's weakest area. We awarded this facility a grade of D in this area. This was one of the couple of weak links of a strong report card. In a long-term care setting, the nursing home's primary objective is to maintain residents' quality of life and keep them safe. In addition to providing impressive levels of nursing care and other staffing, this facility gave the pneumonia vaccine to 97.169815 percent of its patients. These scores are clearly more favorable than a few of its other marks in this category. Surprisingly, this facility also keeps its patients out of the hospital. It had just 0.42 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.
