Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home received a strong overall grade as described above, but we especially want to emphasize its excellent short-term care score. We awarded them an A in this category. Our short-term care grade is typically employed to assess a facility's performance with rehabilitation. To have highly rated rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to feature higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This nursing home boosted its score in this category by offering more than 50% more physical therapy hours to its residents than the average facility. The last metric we assessed in this area is the number of patients who who were able to eventually return home from the facility. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in California in this area with 67.9 percent of its residents returning home. At most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this facility also excelled in the area of inspections, where it earned an B+. Inspection scores are tied to several items found on the a nursing home's recent government inspections. Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this category typically have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in the industry.
Nurse Quality
This facility is also strong in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of B+. It outperformed most nursing homes in this category. The nursing rating is based on a number of datapoints. The most heavily weighted one is the quantity of hours nurses spend with patients. This place provides an incredible 4.6 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This is much more care than what is provided by most places. Finally, this facility also excelled in several of the quality-based metrics we assessed. With fewer than five percent of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the state in this category. This is generally an indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Many pressure ulcers can be avoided by providing better nursing care and a system of moving patients more frequently.
Long-term Care Quality
The last area we graded was long-term care. We awarded this facility a C in that area. In computing our long-term care grades, we assess the assistance with daily living offered to a facility's patients. On top of patient-friendly nursing hour statistics, this facility's vaccination record is better than most nursing homes also. Indeed, this facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia. The last statistic we assessed is the facility's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this nursing home had 1.92 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is not too far off the national average.
