We also found that this facility excelled in our short-term care rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Our short-term care grades are thought to be more critical for folks requiring a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires additional highly-skilled nursing. This means not merely nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. When we assessed this facility's nursing hours, we found it offered substantially more care from registered nurses than most nursing homes. The last measure we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. It performed as well as just about any nursing home in Colorado in this area with 64.5 percent of its residents returning home.

Adding to its impressive category grades, this nursing home also excelled in the category of inspections, where it received a grade of A. These inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these factors by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.

To complement its strong performance in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections rating. The nursing rating weighs many datapoints, many of which are based on levels of nurse staffing. This facility provided 3.9 hours of nursing care per patient per day. Approximately a quarter of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are among the most highly skilled levels of nurses. Both are impressive figures, which typically correlates with higher quality care. Finally, this nursing home also performed well in several of the quality measures we looked at. For example, in terms of the number of its patients sustaining falls leading to serious injury, this facility performed as well as any nursing home in the state. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can generally be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

The last area we analyzed was long-term care. In that category, we awarded this facility an acceptable grade of C. This actually proved to be this nursing home's worst category. In a long-term care environment, the primary goal is to maintain residents' quality of life and keep them safe. One of the data points we considered in addition to this facility's quality nursing hours was vaccinations. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its residents. This is a great way to avoid unnecessary deaths for the aged 65 and up population. This combination proved to be successful as this nursing home keeps its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.56 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
