Facility Inspections
Although we did not rate this facility highly overall, we want to draw your attention to its excellent health inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A- in this category. Arguably the most significant factor we consider in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. It is generally best to avoid nursing homes that have too many severe deficiencies. This facility was hit with 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered severe. This means that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies an immediate threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Nurse Quality
We also awarded this facility a grade of B- for our nursing rating. Nursing ratings are mostly based on the facility's nurse staffing. This facility provides 3 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This is a lower figure than we are used to seeing. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics. While this facility got dinged a bit for nursing hours per resident, it excelled in some of these quality-based measures. With fewer than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it did remarkably well in this subcategory. This can be a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as having a system of turning a patient even once per day.
Long-term Care Quality
Sadly, this facility's next highest score was long-term care. As it turns out, with a D in this area, it still fared relatively badly. Facilities that don't fare well in this category typically aren't as well-staffed and are lagging in a few of the areas of routine personal care we looked at. One of the statistics we considered after nurse's aid hours was vaccinations. Frankly, we were a bit bothered by the fact that this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to just 77.23214 percent of its residents. Surprisingly, this place actually fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 1.7 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. This is its best score in this category.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we analyzed was short-term care, which ended up being a low point for this nursing home. We awarded this nursing home a grade of just D for our short-term care category. In the area of short-term care, we seek to evaluate indicators of a facility's rehabilitation services. We look at a facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. With its grade in this area, we weren't surprised to discover that this nursing home is well below average in terms of the quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours offered to its patients based on the metrics we assessed. Honestly, this was what we expected to find. The final datapoint we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients that ultimately returned home from the facility. This facility a bit in this metric as well, with just 45.2 percent of its patients returning home.
