Even though we were not high on this facility overall, we awarded it a B for our short-term care score. Short-term care ratings are important for residents in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually mandates additional skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means a wide range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more hours of physical therapy per week to its residents. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of facilities in the country with 63.7 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most facilities.

Surprisingly, this facility actually received a good grade in inspections as well. We awarded it a grade of B for that category, which is one of our better scores. Few nursing homes that were this poor overall earned multiple category grades of this caliber. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. It is generally in your best interest to avoid places that had a long list of severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This means the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

This facility's second worse category was long-term care, where it received just a D in that category. This is a relatively poor grade. Nursing homes that don't fare well in long-term care typically are not as well-staffed and are lagging in a few of the areas of routine medical care we looked at. After assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination statistics. Candidly, we were a bit worried that this nursing home vaccinated 89.75694 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which happens to be quite a few points less than the national average. To our surprise, this nursing home was actually able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.36 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility has less hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes. This was its best feature in this category.

The last area we looked at is nursing. This facility was given an abysmal grade of F in this area. Our nursing score analyzes several subcategories, most of which are based on quantities of nurse staffing. This nursing home provided only 3.1 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is an alarmingly low total. To go along with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this place also didn't fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This nursing home had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average nursing home.
