Facility Inspections

Grade: A

This nursing home received a quality overall score as described above, but we especially want to emphasize its excellent health inspections in recent years. We gave it an A in this area. Arguably the most important factor we consider in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Facilities with higher scores in this category typically avoided the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. While this facility had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G through L. This means the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies are not something to panic about.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This facility received a favorable short-term care score as well. We awarded it one of our higher grades in that category with a score of B+. Short-term care grades are commonly used to gauge a facility's rehabilitation services. To have high-end rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to have better levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we considered the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 5.3 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.

This nursing home's next best category was nursing. We awarded it a grade of B- in this category. While this wasn't quite as good as some of its other category grades, this isn't a bad score either. Our nursing rating is primarily based on the facility's level of nurse staffing. This place averages just 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient per day, which is a very low figure. Lastly, our nursing ratings also consider quality-based metrics, such as avoiding major falls. Despite not having the most impressive total nursing hours per resident, this place actually performed admirably in the metric of preventing major falls. This is often a good indicator that a place has quality controls in place. Many falls could be avoided if a nursing home provides enough nurses aids to assist its patients.

Long-term Care Quality

Our last area is long-term care, where we gave this facility a grade of B- in that area. In forming our long-term care ratings, we look at the nursing home's personal care services. Once we looked at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is better than the vast majority of nursing homes. This place also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
