Facility Inspections
Although we did not rate this nursing home favorably overall, we want to point out its relatively favorable inspections in recent years. We gave it a respectable grade of B+ in this area, which is much better than its overall score. Arguably the most significant factor we consider in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. It is typically best to avoid places that have too many severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home received 4 deficiencies on its inspection report. Overall, this is still a solid inspection report, but we'd always recommend looking into any deficiencies you find troubling.
Nurse Quality
We also ended up giving this facility a fairly respectable grade in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of C. Our nursing score is largely associated with a facility's nurse staffing. This facility provides 3.9 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is better than average. In determining our nursing ratings, we add additional weight to hours performed by more highly skilled nurses such as registered or licensed nurses. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in some quality-focused statistics. Specifically, we look at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these metrics as reliable measures of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Long-term Care Quality
This facilities next most favorable area is long-term care. We gave it a C in this category. This is basically a middle of the pack grade in this area. In the category of long-term care, we weigh the quantity of care provided by a nursing home, rather than more sophisticated services. After looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination statistics. We were pleased to discover that this facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia. The last datapoint we looked at is the facility's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this nursing home had 6.38 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. While this figure is somewhat concerning, this statistic may be skewed for some facilities due to the medical complexity of patients.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we assessed is short-term care, ended up being this facility's worst category. We awarded this facility a grade of D in this area. Our short-term care grades are meaningful for individuals seeking rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally mandates higher levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes a broad range of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. In this nursing home's case, we found that it offers far less registered nurse hours per patient than the typical facility. Given its score in this area, this did not surprise us. Lastly, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This definitely was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 22.7 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most facilities, around half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.
