Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

This facility earned a strong overall score as described above, but we especially wanted to point out its excellent long-term care score. We gave them an A in this category. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care tend to provide patients with closer supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. In addition to assessing the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is significantly higher than the majority of nursing homes. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.03 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

In addition, this nursing home earned excellent government inspections in recent years. We gave them one of our better scores in that category, with an A-. Inspection scores are tied to items located in the a nursing home's inspection reports. Places that excel in this category tend to have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. While this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

This facility's next best category grade came in the area of nursing. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of B-. This wasn't quite on par with some of its other category grades mentioned above. The nursing rating includes several factors. The most important one is the number of hours nurses spend with patients. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Lastly, although this facility got docked a bit for nursing hours, it actually excelled in some of our quality-based measures. With less than five percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it did remarkably well in this subcategory.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

The final area we rated was short-term care. In this category, we gave this nursing home a C. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The goal is to devise a barometer for comparing the rehabilitation services of various facilities. Unfortunately, we were not able to track down information about this nursing home's registered nurse or physical therapy staffing. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return home from this facility. We found that 0 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was actually quite a bit below average.
