Long-term Care Quality
In addition to being a quality facility overall, this nursing home really excelled in our long-term care category, where it earned an A+. Facilities that excel in this category tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. Once we assessed the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is much higher than most nursing homes. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.03 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
In addition, this facility received excellent health inspections in recent years. We awarded them one of our better grades in that area, with an A-. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection ratings. One key factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these end up being relatively insignificant. Fortunately, although this facility had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

In addition, this facility also received favorable nursing grades this year. In fact, we awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B. Our nursing rating is largely based on a facility's nurse staffing. This facility provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as having a system of turning a resident more often.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we graded was short-term care. It received a lowly F in this category, which is a very poor grade. We would not necessarily rule out a nursing home as a result of one terrible score though. In our short-term care assessment, we try to craft a valuable gauge for rehabilitation services. In this process, we analyze the nursing home's scope of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. Unfortunately, we found that this place provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most facilities. Lastly, we assessed the number of residents who ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 3.2 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
