Facility Inspections
We want to point out that this nursing home outperformed its overall grade in the category of inspections. In fact, it received an excellent government inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our best grades in this area with a grade of A-. Inspection scores are tied to several datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that score well in this area typically have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. While this nursing home had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was given a strong long-term care grade. Indeed, we gave it a grade of B in that category, which happens to be one of our better. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care typically are well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to patients. Once we assessed the amount of nursing care, we next considered the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 99.64789 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia sadly is often a dangerous condition for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a nursing home doesn't leave this to chance. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality
Moving on to the category of short-term care, this facility received a grade of just D in that category. In the area of short-term care, we attempt to assess indicators of a facility's rehabilitation services. We look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. Based on its abysmal rating in this category, we weren't shocked to learn this nursing home provides far fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most facilities. The last item we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents that were able to return home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 4.6 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, this was quite a bit below the national average.
Nurse Quality
Moving on to our last category, this nursing home did not perform very well. Due to a very poor grade of F in nursing, this was its poorest category. There are many criteria included in this category. Many of the criteria are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home offered just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This statistic is well below the national average. In addition to rating below average in nursing hours per resident, this place also had poor marks in the quality-based metrics we looked at in computing our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This nursing home was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in both of these metrics. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These metrics helped pull down this nursing home's nursing grade significantly.
