Facility Inspections
To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections rating. Inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these issues by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
We also want to point out the fact that this facility was given a high-end grade of A- in our short-term care area. In forming our short-term care scores, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our objective is to devise a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. This place is above the national average both in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours offered to its residents. The final measure we assessed in this category is the percentage of residents who who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Pennsylvania in this area with 56.1 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, at most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
Adding to its impressive resume, this nursing home also excelled in our nursing category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- for that category. In computing a facility's nursing grade, we consider the amount of time nurses are seeing residents as well as the level of skill of the nurses. This place provides an impressive 3.4 hours of nursing care per patient daily. Out of this total, more than one quarter of these hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. We add more weight to hours provided by skilled nurses in calculating our nursing grades. Finally, we also looked at certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these metrics as predictive indicators of the caliber of nursing care offered, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Long-term Care Quality
Switching gears to our last category, this nursing home was awarded an extremely favorable long-term care grade. We awarded it an A- in this area, resulting in this facility receiving straight A's. Facilities that excel in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to patients. Once we assessed the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 95.69893 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients healthy. This place was also able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 1.34 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
