The primary reason this nursing home received a decent overall score is its excellent health inspections in recent years. We gave them one of our better grades in that area, with a grade of A+. This is a much better grade than the facility's overall score, which was decent but not in the elite range. Arguably the most significant factor we consider in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Facilities with better scores in this area most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.

This nursing home also performed well in the area of long-term care. Indeed, we gave it a score of A- in that area, which is one of our most impressive grades. Facilities that receive this kind of grade in this category tend to provide consistent around the clock care to ensure residents are well cared for. After assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is better than the vast majority of nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. With 1.95 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home was just about middle of the road in this area.

The next category we analyzed was short-term care. This facility's received a poor short-term care score where it was given an F. In computing these short-term care ratings, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our goal is to devise a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. With a score of this caliber for this category, we were not shocked to find this facility was below average in several staffing areas we focus on. In fact, it supplied significantly fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most facilities. Finally, we assessed the number of patients who who were able to eventually return home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 30.9 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.

Turning to our next area, this nursing home really did not fare well. With an abysmal grade of F in nursing, this is its worst area. Our nursing category consists of quite a few data points, most of which are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is slightly below average. To go along with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this facility also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This place had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average nursing home. This could be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. These metrics pulled down this facility's nursing grade significantly.
