In calculating our short-term care scores, we size up a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other types of therapists. This category is generally a solid assessment of the nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. This facility performed much better in the final datapoint we looked at in this category, which was the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. It performed as well as just about any nursing home in New Mexico in this area with 57 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, at most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
