Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was not a highlight, it actually excelled in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A for that category, which is one of our highest scores. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection scores. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being quite insignificant. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A few minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's long-term care score turns out to be one of its more favorable scores. The facility was given a grade of C in this category. Our long-term care ratings are based in part on a facility's amount of care. This means a broad scope of personal care services, ranging from help with activities of daily living to routine healthcare services. After looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination record. We were optimistic to discover that this nursing home vaccinated 99.71098 percent of its patients for pneumonia. The last statistic we assessed is the nursing home's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this nursing home had 3.97 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this figure is quite a bit higher than the national average, this statistic can be skewed for some nursing homes based on the preexisting medical conditions of patients.
Short-term Care Quality
The third best area we awarded this nursing home in any category came in the category of short-term care, where we gave it a grade of C. Our short-term care ratings are important for patients needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. This includes a wide range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This place performed decently in this area, with 48.9 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
Switching gears to the fourth area, we awarded this nursing home a grade of D for nursing. This is the facility's weakest category score. Nursing scores are tied to quantity of nursing care available. This facility provided 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is below the national average. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this facility also didn't perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average facility. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. These scores hurt this facility's nursing rating quite a bit.
