Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

In addition to being a first-rate nursing home overall, this facility also excelled in our short-term care category, where it received a grade of A+. In computing our short-term care scores, we look at a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. This category is considered to be a useful measure of the facility's rehabilitation. When we assessed this facility's nursing hours, we found it offered substantially more care from registered nurses than most nursing homes. The last datapoint we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. It performed as well as just about any facility in Hawaii in this area with 73.8 percent of its patients returning home. With most nursing homes, less than half of their short-stay patients are able to return home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

We also awarded this nursing home a grade of A- for our nursing grade. Nursing grades are mostly tied to the facility's level of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident daily. At least one quarter of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are skilled nurses. This is a high ratio of skilled nursing. In determining our nursing ratings, we apply additional weight to care provided by registered or licensed nurses. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This nursing home performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can typically be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Facility Inspections

Grade: B

This facility also received favorable government inspections in recent years. In fact, we gave them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B. Inspection grades take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home received 5 deficiencies on its inspection report. Overall, this is still a good inspection report, but we'd always recommend looking into any deficiencies you find troubling.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The final category we scored is long-term care. This nursing home was awarded a favorable long-term care grade in our assessment, with a B-. While this wasn't quite as dominant as several of its other grades, this is still an acceptable grade for that area. Long-term care ratings are vital for prospective residents in need of personal care. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. We were a bit worried that this facility vaccinated only 89.670334 percent of its patients. On a more positive note, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
