Long-term Care Quality
This place performed well in the area of long-term care, where it received an A+. When nursing homes receive this kind of score in long-term care it is a good sign for patient care and suggests that the facility is well-staffed with nurses and aids. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia is often a life threatening illness for nursing home residents so we prefer when a nursing home does not leave its residents vulnerable. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Facility Inspections
This nursing home's second best category grade came in the area of government inspections. In that category, we gave this nursing home a B. It actually outperformed most nursing homes in this category. Inspection ratings weigh several factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better scores in this category usually have few of these severe deficiencies. This place was assessed 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered severe. This tells you that the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to create an immediate risk to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Nurse Quality
Next, we looked at the nursing category where we awarded this nursing home a grade of B-, which is a decent grade. Our nursing rating looks at the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We look at both the levels of licensure of the nurses and the amount of time spent with patients. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This is a low total compared to most other facilities. Finally, our nursing scores also consider quality-based metrics, such as avoiding major falls. Despite not having the highest total nursing hours, this nursing home performed admirably in the metric of preventing major falls. This is typically a reliable indicator that a place has quality controls in place. Many falls could be avoided if a nursing home provides enough nurses aids to assist its residents.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we analyzed is short-term care. We gave this nursing home a D in the area of short-term care, making this its weakest category. In crafting these short-term care scores, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our objective is to devise a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. We found that this nursing home was below average in several staffing metrics we focus on. The facility supplied fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most nursing homes. Finally, we assessed the percentage of patients who eventually returned home from this facility. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 4.3 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.

Minimizes Urinary Tract Infections

This indicates the percentage of residents that sustained a urinary tract infection. UTI's are routinely caused by worse hygiene protocols. Additional nurse staffing minimizes the number of UTI's sustained by residents in a nursing home. In Knollwood Manor, 16.15% of Patients use Anti-Psychotic Medication
This figure is a measure of the percentage of long-term patients who are given antipsychotic drugs. Excessive reliance on these medications may suggest that a nursing home is using these medications to control patient behavior in scenarios where such medications are not medically indicated.
