Registered Staff Hours
Nurse Quality
On top of performing well in its overall score, this facility earned even higher grades in nursing. We gave it one of our best grades in that category with an A-. Our nursing rating weighs many factors, but the primary consideration is the quantity of nurse hours spent with patients. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This facility performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can many times be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Facility Inspections
Adding to its impressive category grades, we awarded this facility a grade of A- for our inspections rating. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating our inspection grades. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these end up being quite insignificant. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few relatively minor dings are not the end of the world.

Short-term Care Quality
Turning to an additional strength for this facility, we awarded them one of our better grades in our short-term care category as well, with a grade of B+. Short-term care grades are often employed to judge a facility's performance with rehabilitation In order to provide highly rated rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to offer better levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. We were not able to find information about this nursing home's registered nurse or physical therapy staffing. The last datapoint we considered in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We found that 5 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
Long-term Care Quality
The next area we graded is long-term care, in which we awarded it a strong grade of B. This facility really does not have any weak links. Nursing homes that excel in long-term care tend to provide residents with more supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. In addition to looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is much higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
