Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

In addition to receiving a strong overall grade, this nursing home also earned an elite long-term care rating. We awarded them one of our better grades in that area, with a grade of A-. In a long-term care setting, the nursing home's primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. In addition to considering the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 91.25 percent of its patients, which is slightly lower than we were hoping for. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

This facility received high grades in the area of nursing as well. In fact, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A-. Our nursing score is primarily associated with a nursing home's nurse staffing. This facility provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This nursing home performed very well in the area of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.

Facility Inspections

Grade: B-plus

Moving on to another of this facility's strengths, it also earned a very impressive inspection rating. In fact, inspections proved to be one of its best grades. In that category, we gave this facility a grade of B+. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in determining our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Places with better scores in this category typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This facility received 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered to be severe. This indicates that the government inspectors did not deem any of these deficiencies to cause an imminent threat to resident safety or health. We should note that deficiency-free inspections are rare in this industry.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The final category we analyzed is short-term care, where this facility was awarded a B-. This ended up being this facility's least impressive category. This is nevertheless a middle of the pack score. In computing our short-term care scores, we analyze a facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This area is more often than not a useful measure of the facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these types of nurses. However, based on the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 5 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most nursing homes, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this figure is below average.
