Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

The main reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it received an elite inspection score. In fact, its inspection grade was far better than its overall score. In our inspections category, we gave it an A+. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Facilities with better grades in this category typically avoided the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Fortunately, although this nursing home had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

This nursing home also performed well in the category of long-term care, with an elite score of A- in this category. When nursing homes receive this kind of score in this category it is usually a good sign for patient care and indicates that the facility is well-staffed with nurses aids. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is far higher than the average nursing home. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

This facility received a very good nursing rating this year as well. It earned one of our higher grades in that area with a grade of F. In determining a facility's nursing grade, we look at the number of hours nurses are caring for patients as well as the skill levels of those nurses. This facility provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality measures in calculating our nursing ratings. This facility performed well in terms of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. Many consider these datapoints to be measures of the quality of nursing care.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: F

This facility's least impressive area was short-term care, which is the last category we looked at. We gave it an F in this category. Even with multiple decent grades in other areas, this grade is nevertheless concerning so we would like to to draw your attention to it. Short-term care grades are often used to gauge a nursing home's rehabilitation services. To provide high-end rehabilitation services, facilities generally must provide higher levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. Lastly, we assessed the number of residents that ultimately returned home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 3.6 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.
