Even though we graded this nursing home incredibly poorly overall, it received a fairly respectable nursing rating this year. We gave it a B- in that category. When computing our nursing ratings, we analyze both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the training levels of the nurses. This facility provides 4.1 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This is better than average. In determining our grades, we apply more weight to hours performed by more highly trained nurses such as registered or licensed nurses. Finally, our nursing ratings also weigh quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This nursing home performed above average in this area. This is usually a reliable measure of how carefully a place's nursing staff is tending to its residents. Major falls can generally be avoided if more nurses and superior safety protocols are used.

We were also stunned to discover that this facility received a decent short-term care rating in our assessment. We awarded it a B- in that area. In computing our short-term care ratings, we look at a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. This area is generally a fair measure of a facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. This place is above the national average in terms of its quantity of both physical therapy and registered nurse staffing provided to its residents. These are generally good indicators of quality short-term care. Lastly, we considered the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 36.8 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this is below average.

We were also surprised to learn that this facility received a decent long-term care rating this year. We gave it a C in this category. For long-term care residents, the primary objective is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. After we finished assessing the quantity of nursing care, we next considered the facility's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 91.160225 percent of its patients against pneumonia. The last datapoint we assessed was the nursing home's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this facility had a relatively high 3.4 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Neither its vaccination record nor its hospitalization rate were strengths for this place in this area.

Moving on our final area of inspections, this nursing home received an F in this area. Since this data is compiled by independent government inspectors, we heavily weight negative feedback in this area. We would advise paying close attention to any deficiencies on a nursing home's inspection reports when it receives this poor of an inspection grade. We would pay close attention to the level of severity of those deficiencies. This particular nursing home had 4 deficiencies on its inspection report. The only positive thing we can say is that none of these deficiencies were in the categories that indicate that they posed a risk to patient safety or health. Finally, CMS flagged this nursing home for possible abuse or neglect. This is not what you want to see. We advise you to direct your search elsewhere.
