Facility Inspections
Although we gave this nursing home a poor overall score, we gave it a grade of B+ for our inspections rating. This is the result of the facility receiving a decent government inspection report this year. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in calculating our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. It is typically in your best interest to avoid nursing homes that had a long list of deficiencies. This nursing home was assessed 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This indicates that the inspectors did not consider any of these deficiencies to cause an imminent threat to resident safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
Remarkably, we awarded this facility a grade of C for its short-term care score, which isn't too bad of a score. Our short-term care grades are critical for residents needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires more highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means a wide range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other types of therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Finally, we assessed the percentage of residents that were able to return home from this nursing home. It performed better than most nursing homes in the nation in this area with 51.6 percent of its patients returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
In addition, we gave this facility a rock-bottom F in the category of long-term care. For prospective residents in need of a permanent place to live as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care is an important category. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 99.49875 percent of its residents, which is better than the majority of nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. With 1.77 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this place did not fare quite as well.
Nurse Quality
The last category we looked at is nursing. This facility received a bottom of the barrel grade of F in that category. The nursing grade considers numerous subcategories. The most important variable is the amount of time nurses spent with residents. This facility provided only 3.3 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. On top of receiving below average marks for total nursing hours, this facility was less impressive in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in calculating our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of residents suffering pressure ulcers and found this nursing home was at approximately 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many pressure ulcers are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, this statistic really dragged down this nursing home's nursing score substantially.
