In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this nursing home also received an A+ in short-term care. In crafting our short-term care grades, we quantify the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The goal is to devise a tool for comparing the rehabilitation services of various facilities. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these skilled professionals. However, based on the information they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last measure we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents that who were able to eventually return home from the facility. We found that 6.1 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home as opposed to remaining at the facility on a permanent basis.

Contributing to its strong resume, this facility also was awarded an excellent long-term care score, with a score of A. In a long-term care setting, the primary goal is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. After considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 82.72727 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which happens to be a few points less than we were hoping for but still a reasonably acceptable percentage. Although its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we hoped for, at least this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A- in our nursing category. Our nursing rating considers a variety of subcategories. The most heavily weighted variable is the number of hours nurses spend with residents. This facility provided 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This nursing home performed very well in the area of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.

Turning to our inspection category, this nursing home excelled in that area, which is based on the facility's recent inspection reports. In fact, we awarded it an elite grade of A- for that category. This completed its straight A report card. Inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints.
