Facility Inspections
In addition to being a respectable nursing home overall, this facility also excelled in the area of inspections, where it earned an A. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection ratings. One critical factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are quite insignificant. This facility was assessed 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This tells you that CMS didn't consider any of these deficiencies to create an imminent risk to patient health or safety. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was given a favorable long-term care grade. In fact, we gave them a grade of B in this area, which happens to be one of our better. Long-term care ratings in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. Once we assessed the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 87.23404 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which happens to be somewhat less than we expected but still a decent percentage. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this nursing home had 2.35 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility received its third highest category score in the category of short-term care. We gave this facility a grade of C in this area, which is an acceptable score. In computing our short-term care scores, we scrutinize the facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other types of therapists. This score is often a solid measure of the nursing home's rehabilitation services. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. The last measure we considered in this area is the number of patients that were able to return home from the facility. It fared better than most facilities in this area with 51.4 percent of its residents returning home. For most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
The last area we graded is nursing, is this nursing home's weakest area. We gave this nursing home a grade of D in this category. This is one of just a couple of weak links in a strong profile. In calculating our nursing grades, we assess both nursing hours and the skill levels of the nurses. This nursing home provides 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is slightly below average. On top of its below average nursing hour totals, this nursing home also received suboptimal marks in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We found that more of this place's patients suffered falls which led to major injury. We would argue that many falls could be avoided with better nursing care. This metric contributed to this nursing home receiving a terrible nursing rating.
