Facility Inspections
Although this facility's overall score was as bad as it gets, it actually fared pretty well in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B for that category, which is one of our better scores. Inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these issues by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Not having any deficiencies is this facility's best achievement.
Long-term Care Quality
We were also pleasantly surprised to learn that this nursing home earned a somewhat respectable long-term care grade this year. We awarded it a grade of C in that area. Our long-term care grades are more meaningful for folks in need of more traditional assistance related to personal care. After assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 99.0991 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is more than the average nursing home. This place keeps its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality
Among this nursing home's several poor grades was its F in the area of nursing care. Our nursing grade analyzes the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We factor in both the levels of licensure of the nurses and the number of hours spent with residents. This facility provided a meager 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is an alarmingly low total. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality measures in determining our nursing scores. This place fared well in terms of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these datapoints to be good measures of the quality of nursing care.
Short-term Care Quality
The final category we assessed is short-term care. Sadly, it received a lowly F in this area, which is a bottom of the barrel score. Our short-term care grade is often used to gauge a facility's performance with rehabilitation. In order to provide highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must offer better levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other types of therapists. With a grade of this caliber for this category, we were not stunned to discover this nursing home was well below average in two of the key staffing figures we focus on. The nursing home provided significantly fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most nursing homes. Lastly, we considered the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. This wasn't a strength for this nursing home. We found that just 4 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. At most facilities, around half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.
