Facility Inspections
While we didn't give this nursing home a good overall grade, we did give it a relatively strong grade in the area of inspections, where it received a B+. Our inspection grades account for several factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One key criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid places with a list of deficiencies flagged. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was given a positive long-term care grade. Indeed, we awarded them a grade of B in this area, which is one of our better. Facilities that do well in long-term care tend to provide patients with more supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. On top of considering the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is very impressive. Pneumonia sadly can be a life threatening illness for nursing home residents so we prefer when a nursing home doesn't roll the dice on this issue. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.04 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality
We also wanted to point out that this nursing home received an F for its nursing grade. There are a number of datapoints within this grade. Most of these subcategories are tied to the quantity and quality of nurse staffing. This facility offered only 0.2 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is an alarmingly low total. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing grades. This facility performed well in the area of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these areas to be good measures of the quality of nursing care.
Short-term Care Quality
The final category we assessed was short-term care. This nursing home was given a rock bottom grade of F in that area. With our short-term care assessment, we endeavor to craft a meaningful barometer for rehabilitation. In this process, we look at a facility's levels of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. Given its grade in this category, we were not stunned to learn that this facility is well below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours offered to its patients based on the data we looked at. Frankly, this was about what we expected to find. The last measure we considered in this category is the number of patients that who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 0 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below average.
