Although we didn't rate this nursing home favorably overall, we want to note its relatively favorable long-term care grade this year. We gave it a B in this area. Long-term care scores of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 69.73545 percent of its residents, which is a few points below what we were hoping for. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

We awarded this facility a respectable grade in the area of nursing as well, with a grade of B-. There are several subcategories included in this grade. Most of the criteria relate to staffing levels. This nursing home averages just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low figure. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this place surprisingly fared better in some of the quality measures we looked at. In fact, it performed well in terms of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care. In some cases, the quality of nursing care is just as important as the quantity of hours of care offered.

In yet another surprising turn, we actually gave this facility a very solid grade in the area of inspections as well. In fact, we awarded it a B- in this category. This is better than many nursing homes in this category. We believe that one of the most critical factors in assessing an inspection report is deficiencies. We especially look at the severity of the deficiencies. This nursing home was hit with 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe. This means that the government inspectors did not deem any of these deficiencies to create an immediate threat to resident safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.

The final area we rated was short-term care. Unfortunately, we gave it an abysmal F in this category, which is a very poor score. Our short-term care scores are thought to be more critical for patients needing rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation generally requires higher levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means not merely nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. As you might expect, we found that this place provides substantially less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than the average nursing home. The final item we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 1.9 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar metrics doomed this nursing home's short-term care grade.
