Long-term Care Quality
This facility fared well in long-term care, with an A in this area. This really helped its overall score quite a bit. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care tend to provide patients with closer supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents out of the hospital. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.25 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home had fewer hospitalizations than many nursing homes.
Facility Inspections
We also wanted to emphasize this facility's nearly flawless government inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of B+ in this category. Inspection ratings are based on many items found on the a nursing home's recent government inspections. Facilities that excel in this area have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Nurse Quality
The next highest grade we gave this nursing home in any area came in the category of nursing, where we gave it a grade of C. The nursing category weighs many components, many of which are associated with quantities of nurse staffing. This facility provided 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, our nursing scores also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This nursing home performed better than average in this area. This is generally a reliable indicator of how carefully a nursing home's nursing staff is tending to its residents. Major falls can typically be avoided if more nurses and better safety protocols are in place.
Short-term Care Quality
The last category we graded was short-term care. Sadly, it received an abysmal F for this category, which is a bottom of the barrel score. This is obviously a major concern. In the category of short-term care, we try to assess measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We assess a facility's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. As you might expect, we learned that this place offers substantially less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than a typical nursing home. Lastly, we considered the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that just 26.7 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.
