Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

We awarded this facility an A- for our long-term care score. This grade is far more impressive than the facility's overall score. When facilities receive this kind of score in long-term care it is a good sign for resident care and suggests that the facility is well-staffed with nurses and aids. In addition to considering the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 98.24561 percent of its residents. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents healthy. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. While it had 3.45 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was close to the national average since it had some more complicated patients.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

Additionally, we gave this facility a B+ in our short-term care category. This is one of our higher scores. In determining our short-term care grades, we analyze the facility's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. This category is generally a reliable assessment of the nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. This nursing home increased its rating in this category by providing more than 1.5 times as many hours of physical therapy to its residents than a typical facility. The final measure we looked at in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in South Carolina in this area with 60.6 percent of its residents returning home.

Facility Inspections

Grade: C

This nursing home also received a decent inspection grade. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of C. Inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these factors by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This facility was assessed 2 deficiencies on its government inspection report, but fortunately none were in categories G through L. This indicates the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies to create an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Nurse Quality

Grade: D

The final category we rated was nursing. We awarded this facility a D for the area of nursing, rendering this the nursing home's worst area. Our nursing score weighs many data points, most of which are based on nursing hours. This facility provided 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is below the national average. To go along with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this facility also didn't perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of residents experiencing major falls and pressure ulcers. This facility had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average facility. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These metrics hurt this nursing home's nursing grade quite a bit.
